Women's Health and The Midwife Theory with Lydia Curley-Sanchez

Being healthy is something that for some reason, humans struggle with. But with the proper advice and care, you can feel on top of the world. So, meet Lidia, a midwife in London and an expert on keeping yourself and your body happy. These are her top tips.

physical and pelvic floor exercise

All types of exercise are good because they help out your joints and muscles. But with regards to pelvic floor exercises, there are two: the fast twitch and slow twitch. It doesn’t matter which you do. The fast-twitch it like pulsating your vagina on and off for a few seconds. Imagine you’re holding in pee or a fart. The slow-twitch is where you hold for up to 10 seconds.

It’s super important for ALL women to do these exercises because our anatomy puts a lot of strain on our poor muscles down below. Let alone when you grow a baby. The earlier you get into the habit of doing pelvic floor exercises the better. They can be done once a day, with your morning coffee or commute for example, and no one can even tell you’re doing them. They’re also great for sculpting!

food is life

You need to have a balanced diet. Women have hormones pumping around our body at a much higher volume than men, which can make us very bloated, especially at certain times of the month. Listen to your body and eat intuitively. If you’re hungry, don’t snack. Eat something properly, where it could be fruit, veg or chocolate. Don’t see food as a reward or punishment. That’s the basic and fundamental sign of a toxic relationship with food. A chocolate bar is not “bad food”. It’s only bad if you binge eat lots within a small period of time and it hurts your stomach.

A salad is not a “good food”. It is only good when it is combined with other foods you like. You need a balance of all types of food, including carbs and fats. No food group or meal should be a reward or a punishment because you need a mixture of it all every day and every week. Listen to your body! Don’t starve it and don’t fill it up too much.

Mindfulness is super important. You can work on this through exercise, painting, reading, talking, etc. Find the niche hobby that you love, however strange or mundane, then take advantage of it. Use it as your escape from the real world and to remind you how alive you really are. We are all important and beautiful. We need to be thankful for our physical and mental health so be good to your emotions. Accept them, help them make you feel and turn it into something beautiful.

let's get saucy

Contraception. It’s your decision. Sometimes hormones work really well for some but not for others. There are so many different types out there, but always weigh the risks vs. benefits and look at the side effects. Always listen to your practitioner’s advice too! But most importantly use it. Sex can be fun and it is a basic human need, but having a baby when your not ready can take some serious thought along with STIs which can have a huge life change effect.
